13 Cosplay Experts Tell Their 3 Favorite Cosplay Character`s

Everyone knows that great feeling of choosing and making their next Cosplay character costume, are you looking for ideas or inspiration?

Sometimes I think how great it would be if I had a special power to know all someones favorite Cosplay characters beyond the one they are wearing at the time. Well the second best thing is to just ask!

Next time you are at a event I encourage you to ask your fellow Cosplayer for their favorite 3 characters to play. There is always more than one and it is a great conversation starter for exploring and fulfilling curiosity maybe even getting some more ideas for yourself.

Well I asked 13 of my favorite Cosplayers who their 3 most favorite Cosplay characters are. What they told me went beyond face value uncovering more than a love of dressing up and ideas for looking fantastic only. That one character is just the tip of the iceberg. All their replies are given below:

Tom loves D.Va, Stormtrooper, Harley Quinn

It also shows the strength of community

Tom wants to bring Cosplay to the masses by educating on how to modify everyday off the shelf costumes into the rare Cosplay characters using just modifications.

"My top 3 are:

D.Va: D.Va has so my varieties to pick, from bodysuit that's as accessible a costume as you can find, to gremlin D.Va who loves Doritos and Mountain Dew, to the intricate Hanbok traditional Korean dress, to the mech suit taped together from cardboard boxes.

Stormtrooper: Stormtroopers are the OGs of cosplay. The humble Stormtrooper shows the depth of cosplay, where you can go from an off-the-shelf costume and still look good, to getting down and dirty with accuracy to screen and lore. It also shows the strength of community, seeing huge battalions of Stormtroopers enjoy the camaraderie.

Harley Quinn: The DC universe has iconic costumes, with Batman and the Joker at the very top. But for me, Harley Quinn takes the last spot. In a stinker of a movie, Margot Robbie's version rose above and left a mark on pop culture. However, the jester version from Batman: The Animated Series, even though it's a less common cosplay, would be my pick."

April loves the people behind the costumes more than the costumes - what a amazing answer!

April -

https://popculthq.com/

@CultHQ

@PopCultHQ

It's not the characters I like as much as it is the people portraying them.

April is a Cosplayer and owner of PopCultHQ a professional media web page with a focus on the “Three C’s” – Comics, Cosplay and Conventions and does not have a overall favorite explained below.

"I like to see some of the more obscure and lesser known characters, but I can't really say that I have a particular favorite character I like to see Cosplayed. I truly appreciate them all for the time, skill, and thought that went into them.

I love the big flashy Cosplays and huge armor builds. Living with a builder, I know what goes into them. They are spectacular show pieces and frequently a testament to someones skills and devotion to their art. The costumes I enjoy the most aren't always the best looking out there or the most accurate.

They are frequently cobbled together by amateurs who want to show their love of a character and have fun. These are quite often the ones with minimal budgets, time, or knowledge that put together pieces or buy a Halloween costume.

I truly love the look on someones face when you recognize their character and ask for a photo, especially when they've convinced themselves it will never happen because they think their costume is crap. It's not the characters I like as much as it is the people portraying them."

I don't think cosplays have to be like pin point accurate, I like seeing gender bends or blended characters I.e modern versions or punk versions etc.

Heather is the founder and creator of The Valkyries, she is an avid player of games, reader of comics, watcher of films and drinker of brews! Big into horror movies and video games, she is always down for a discussion about why horror movies the god tier of all move genres and a beer! Heather loves Geralt of Rivias, Fallout vault dwellers, Family Cosplays read below:

"So in terms of cosplay, I just like to see some imagination and passion. I don't think Cosplays have to be like pin point accurate, I like seeing gender bends or blended characters I.e modern versions or punk versions etc.

But! My top 3 to see at conventions are always:

Geralt of Rivias- The Witcher 3 is my all time favorite game, so love seeing the white wolf, and with the Netflix show you just get more, often tossing coins which is always a laugh.

Fallout vault dwellers, extra bonus points for power armour or homemade pip boys! I did a vault dweller for Halloween one year complete with homemade pipboy using the fallout 4 app you can get that does a screen. It was a hit!

Family cosplays- so I saw an amazing family doing Alana, Marko and Hazel from the Saga comics series which was incredible!"

It's given me confidence and serves as a reminder of overcoming adversity in my own life

When Jamie is not geeking out over comics you’ll find him walking the streets of Manchester, England with a novel in hand. He is a DC, Marvel and WWE fanboy and also a short story writer and poet, his stories having been published by Hyperion and Theia, Colp, EastLit Magazine, Liquid Imagination and more. Jamie loves Red Hood, Nightwing, Deathstroke and Thor

"I've only cosplayed as Red Hood but would enjoy cosplaying as Nightwing, Deathstroke and Thor in the future. The reason why Red Hood is my favourite is because I find Jason Todd's story as a survivor relatable to my own journey. From the beginning, Jason wasn't afraid to follow his own path and do what he thought was right, even when it went against what Batman had taught him. He continued to fight for what he believed in and that takes a lot of guts and courage.

When dressing as Red Hood, it's felt like putting on my own suit of armour and feeling connected to the story of the character. It's given me confidence and serves as a reminder of overcoming adversity in my own life and I think that kind of feeling is extremely powerful from a mental health perspective. Cosplaying can become a valuable part of a positive mental health routine."

Roger a veteran Cosplayer likes to help the Cosplay community sharing invaluable information and guides including creating Cosplay on a budget

"By far my 3 favorite cosplays are: Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist, Sebastian from Black Butler and Marth from Fire Emblem. I generally like these characters because they're amazing characters in the actual Anime/video game.

On top of that, all three of them are relatively easy and comfortable to wear (I've had other costumes where they're really uncomfortable after a while). And best of all, Cosplaying them allowed me to meet other people who were into the same series.

Some of these people are my close friends today. So if I had to pick 3, it definitely would be Roy, Sebastian and Marth!"

Our Ghostbusters (Holtzmann and Yates) cosplay is our most expensive build and likely took us the most amount of time. It was also our first "professional" cosplay, which holds a special place in our hearts.

MaeBerry Cosplay is a cosplay couple based out of Albuquerque, NM specializing in body positive portrayals of LGBTQI+ characters. They love Carmilla Movie ballgowns, Our Ghostbusters (Holtzmann and Yates),Our Monster High

"Our top 3 favorite cosplays are as follows:

1) Our Carmilla Movie ballgowns are our most intricate cosplay to date. We spent so much time and effort in extensive detail for our first, period piece. We were unable to find purple and black striped fabric so we had to dye the many tresses of Carmilla's gown.

The crimping on the bodice of Laura's gown was also tedious with much starch and ironing. Plus, many of the fabrics were hard to soure for authenticity to the time period, along with the desired weight and colors.

2) Our Ghostbusters (Holtzmann and Yates) cosplay is our most expensive build and likely took us the most amount of time. It was also our first "professional" cosplay, which holds a special place in our hearts.

3) Our Monster High cosplay predates our 1st cosplay and was our first group cosplay. We created Robecca Steam and Spectra Vondergeist. The hand-painted corset and bodice for Robecca was extreme detail work by hand and it was our first corset build so there was a big learning curve."

3 of our favourites though would have to be...

The Space Marine( WH40K) - Genehanced super soldiers who’s loyalty is to the Imperium of man and The God Emperor.

The Night Elf ( WoW) - A deadly warrior, trained to kill with blades and Bow.

Mikey loves - Tenzin, Hestu, Ashnard

Mikey MacWolff -

www.mikeydoescosplay.com

https://www.facebook.com/MikeyDoesCosplay/

https://www.instagram.com/mikeydoescosplay/

https://twitter.com/mikeycosplay

Don't get me wrong, I cosplay mostly for myself because I really enjoy showing some love to my favorite characters, but it's also really nice to make those connections with other fans of the same series!

Mikey is a Cosplayer, crafter, nerd, animal lover, steampunker, gaymer, dancer... all of these words pretty accurately describes his life.On a day-to-day basis you'll most likely find me on the floor of my house in northeastern Ohio either playing video games, painting, sewing, or making goodness knows what.

Mikey loves Tenzin from Legend of Korra, Hestu from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , Ashnard from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

"Of my own Cosplays, I'd say these are my top three, all for their own unique reasons.

1) Tenzin from Legend of Korra [Photo by Lydia Joy Palmer, https://www.facebook.com/lydiapalmerart]

Tenzin is one of my favorite Cosplays to hang out at conventions in (when we were still having conventions, anyway). He was one of my favorite characters from Legend of Korra and I've always identified myself as an "airbender," so it's a good fit for my personality.

It's also one of the most comfortable Cosplays I have; there's no bulky armor, no big props to carry around, there's not even a wig! It's also nice because it's one of the more widely-recognized characters I cosplay, so I tend to have more interactions with people when I'm wearing it than some of my other, more obscure characters.

Don't get me wrong, I cosplay mostly for myself because I really enjoy showing some love to my favorite characters, but it's also really nice to make those connections with other fans of the same series!

2) Hestu from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild [Photo by Eric Kosino]

Hestu might be my number one favorite of all the Cosplays I've made thus far. It's not overly complicated or detailed, but its just so much fun to wear. My first time playing through Breath of the Wild, I met Hestu and he immediately became my favorite character.

He's just a goofy, dancing forest spirit who helps Link out on his adventures, and so he speaks directly to my soul. The interactions I get with people when I wear him are great, some people just shout "Yahaha!" at me (which is what the koroks say in the game when you find their hiding spots), or ask me to dance for them, which of course I'm always happy to shake my maracas and dance around for people!!

3) Ashnard from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance [Photo by Rose Stierna]

Ashnard is another of my favorites for more technical reasons; it's one of my more impressive Cosplays as far as details go, with embroidered designs on his tunic, a number of unusual belts that I had to make myself, detailed armor pieces, a cape truly fit for a king, and a giant sword with a really cool design.

The cape is one of my favorite parts because it's the type of cape that will keep you warm in a blizzard (though you're likely to sweat when you're inside at a convention). It's made with two layers of velvet and trimmed with faux fur, meaning its about 10lb worth of fabric, but the velvet flows so nicely and it really just makes me feel regal wearing it. My other

favorite part is his giant sword, Gurgurant; prop-making, particularly fantasy weapons, are one of my favorite things to do for cosplay, and his sword is one of the most impressive weapons I've made for myself thus far.

It's pretty heavy to carry around, which when combined with the cape and the armor pieces means that Ashnard is certainly not the most comfortable cosplay to wear for an extended period of time, but whenever I wear it I remember all of the time and work I put into making the cosplay and I'm really proud of how it turned out! Also, it's just fun to be a villain sometimes!

Picking 3 of my favorites out of all the awesome Cosplays out there is going to be a bit tougher, but I'll do my best to come up with a good selection.

1) Cloud & Tifa from Final Fantasy VII Cosplayers: Multiverse Cosplay (https://www.facebook.com/themultiversecosplay); individually Cloud: CorgisandCurls (https://www.instagram.com/corgisandcurls/) and Tifa: Lyssalalaa (https://www.instagram.com/lyssalalaa/) Photo by Madster Photo (https://www.instagram.com/madster.photo/)

I know I cheated a bit on this one, but Multiverse Cosplay comes as a pair and that's just how it is. Not only are they incredibly talented Cosplayers but they're also some of the sweetest people you'll ever meet. Their Cloud and Tifa Cosplays are some of my favorites, partially because Final Fantasy VII means a lot to me and partially because they fit the characters so well and did such beautiful work making their props and costumes.

2) Semirais from Fate/Apocrypha Cosplayer: Nekoyasha (https://www.instagram.com/nekoyasha09/) Photo by Lazy Fox (https://www.facebook.com/LazyFoxMI/)

There are a lot of awesome Semiramis Cosplays out there but Nekoyasha is one of my favorite! I think a big part of it is because she's got a lot of attitude and personality that she serves up whenever she's in cosplay so photos always turn out beautifully, and then she also provides us with a lot of goofy meme photos too!

3) Azura from Fire Emblem: Fates Cosplayer: Lady Reshi (https://www.instagram.com/ladyreshi/)

Lady Reshi always looks so elegant in all of her Cosplays but Azura is one of my favorites! The way the cosplay flows as she moves is awe-inspiring, which works well considering the character Azura is a performer."

Heather -

https://twitter.com/exeliax https://www.instagram.com/exeliax/

I love how these costumes look, but I also adore the characters; being able to wear costumes to represent a series I love is really important to me!

Hello! My name is Heather, known as Exelia!

I live in North East England and has been Cosplaying since 2005. I am self taught and have made over 100 costumes for myself and others. I love making cute, classic costumes, experimenting with different materials and techniques.. and of course, bringing my favorite characters to life!

"I've made a lot of costumes, so it's hard to pick just 3! But if I really have to choose, it would have to be Aika (Skies of Arcadia), Eleanor Hume (Tales of Berseria) and Eiko Carol (Final Fantasy IX). I love how these costumes look, but I also adore the characters; being able to wear costumes to represent a series I love is really important to me!

Aika is from Skies of Arcadia, my favorite video game - it's old and quite obscure. Aika's design is very striking, so my costume is like a visual "hello!" to other fans - it's amazing to meet people who love the game as much as I do!

f the "Tales" Series! I've done a lot of "Tales" costumes and have met so many friends through the community. Eleanor's costume is bold, comfortable and easy to wear so it's a great costume to take to events.

Eiko is from Final Fantasy IX. When I played the game for the first time I loved Eiko and wanted to be just like her, so she had always been a "dream costume" of mine! It was also the costume that took myself and my friend Yuka to Japan to compete in World Cosplay Summit, the biggest cosplay competition in the world which is.. pretty awesome."

Mercedes loves The Wander, Aloy, Carja Blazon Armor, Link from Legend of Zelda

Mercedes -

https://www.cosplaystitchandseam.com/

https://www.facebook.com/groups/CosplayStitchAndSeam/

Vermilion Fire, also goes by Mercedes, is always looking to level up her skills in just about anything. She carves wood into swords and shields, makes PVC pipe bows, leather-crafts armor, metal works details, and more. She has won many craftsmanship and performance awards across the Western United States and judged at various conventions and events.VFire founded the Cosplay Stitch and Seam Podcast and Blog to share her love of the culture and creativity in cosplay. Cosplay has been a huge part of her life for making new friends and trying new things. The hobby has helped her become more confident in herself and she seeks out others to help them find their inner strengths through crafting.

This costume pushed my skills to the limit and then some. It was so much fun assembling the over 60 pieces of leather armor and adding on cool "machine" parts.

"Picking three is so difficult! I love silly characters such as Break from Pandora Hearts, but also complex armor sets such as Shiek from Super Smash Brothers Brawl. After much deliberation... My top three favorite cosplay characters could be...

1) The Wander: Shadow of the Colossus. This is also my all time favorite game and I just enjoy stepping into this character's shoes. The game allows for epic scenery and really fun photoshoot ideas, while also being a challenge to create the different bits of clothing. The costume is also one of my most comfortable to wear and easiest to put on, while also looking really well put together.

The sword is my favorite part about this costume set. It is elegant and ancient looking. I did a custom design based on how I saw blade before the remake came out. It is all chipped and worn from stabbing literal mountains but has a magical aura about it. I currently have it on display on my wall in my project space.

2) Aloy, Carja Blazon Armor: Horizon Zero Dawn. This costume pushed my skills to the limit and then some. It was so much fun assembling the over 60 pieces of leather armor and adding on cool "machine" parts.

Capturing the game's aesthetic was so much fun and I technically live in the game's setting, just a few hundred years too early, haha! I got to try new things and in the end, I feel awesome wearing this armor set.

I have never felt more empowered than when wearing this cosplay and the character is really inspiring. Aloy is an incredible individual and I look forward to the sequel!! Plus more armor to create!!

3) Link from Legend of Zelda. This one is cheating because I am including every outfit I have made for Link. I love being the hero character and with Breath of the Wild, I was able to make more looks for my favorite fairy boy.

The Zelda series has always been my favorite and I really love adding simple details, or even complex embroidery, to add character and depth to the outfits. I have been down many lore trails around the zelda series and have a deep admiration for the games and their stories.

Adding a neat little detail to each armor set or piece of clothing that reminds me of a scene or the gameplay just makes my day. I tried quitting making Link builds, but it only last two minutes, haha!

Thank you!"

Socially awkward penguin learning the art of cosplay one costume at a time...

As someone who was just exploring the community, this cosplay was the turning point for me.

"I love all the cosplays I make because I pour all my heart and passion in every craft I do so choosing top 3 among them is tough but after some deliberation, these three are probably my favorite:

- Setsuka Heel from the Skip Beat manga. She was the very first cosplay that I put together myself. As someone who was just exploring the community, this cosplay was the turning point for me.

I used a lot of unconventional materials in building this cosplay and it got harder to maintain overtime so I had a hard time letting it go once it's already starting to fall apart and beyond repair. Since then I vow to myself to redo this cosplay in the future with a much better craftsmanship.

- Hoshizora Rin from Love Live. Coming from an idol anime, the character itself has many options to choose from but I fell in love with the little devil one because of its aesthetic and details. I live in a place where we don't get much resources unless you buy the entire costume online so I had to start most of it from scratch.

It was a very tedious process but detailing has always been therapeutic for me. Looking at the final photos and thinking about all the times spent working on it makes me really proud of myself.

- My Yang Xiao Long cosplays from RWBY. I love Yang so much and she's my favorite character from the series so I already made a promise to myself that I'm cosplaying all her outfits. So far I already finished two and I love both of them so much.

As someone who's just learning and being self taught, her costumes are a nightmare to begin with, from structuring to detailing and prop-making.

These were the times where I couldn't even picture the endgame because of all the trial and error I had to go through. Completing them was truly rewarding and something I feel really proud of.

Thanks and have a great day."

Wow! What an amazing collection of preferences and insights. This shows there are more characters out there than Wolverine can shake his claws at, Judge Dredd can judge or a Steampunker can show his pocket watch to. So many to learn about and experiment with in your costume.

2020.10.23 10:33 Logiman43 How PIS destroyed Poland.

EDIT: This post is in an article format with pictures and graphs here
I can't be silent anymore. In 2018, out of 1076 abortions in Poland, 1 was because of rape, 25 because it was dangerous for the woman's life and 1050 because of an unhealthy fetus. It means that PIS just totally banned abortion in Poland
Too few Europeans are aware of the depth of this crisis. The current Polish government is destroying the country from inside-out with its nepotism, religious zeal, communistic tactics, social programs and funding verge organizations (or trolls). It breaks every single law, making unconstitutional laws since 2015 and destroying the court of law. How Poland is pushing EU into crisis - rise of populism. The video is 2 years old and now it's worst
PIS staffed every single judicial court with its own people (ending the impartiality of judges). The very aggressive social 500+ program increased the job inactivity of Poles to 48% (48% of 15+ Polish citizens are NEET. Unemployment is at 5-6%). The Job vacancies in Poland are at the lowest level in EU. The corruption and nepotism is rampant, more than 1000 family members and friends are in public companies or in different Ministries. Polish PIS high ranking politicians are also making money together with pimps and mafia (see scandals down there). They are also giving millions of euros from public money to the Catholic Church. They are paying trolls to spew hate on Facebook, via Whatsapp and on the web. Some of them are hiding and not prosecuting pedophiles in the Catholic Church. Poland has almost the lowest innovation in EU. In 15 indexes tracking freedom and democracy in Europe Poland went from an average position of 12 out of 28 in 2010 to 23 out of 28 in 2019. I mean, not to diminish Trump’s “awesomeness” but imagine if the WHOLE republican party in the US was Trump-like. Shady deals, family in the govt, creating discord, staffing courts with their own judges. I’m just mortified.
For further reading I recommend: Sadurski, Wojciech. "Poland's Constitutional Breakdown", Oxford University Press, 2019.
Acronyms and main characters:

PiS changes electoral rules in an unconstitutional move. Presidential "elections" 2020 are the Biggest legal blunder of the year

Poland Is Showing the World How Not to Run a Pandemic Election. The upcoming Polish election is shaping up to be a farce. Washington should learn from Warsaw’s mistakes before November.

Wikipedia about this blunder

Destruction of the rule of law.

Some of the passages below are taken from this pdf
No member state in the history of the EU has ever gone as far in subjugating its courts to executive control as the current Polish government. The Polish case has become a test whether it is possible to create a Soviet-style justice system in an EU member state; a system where the control of courts, prosecutors and judges lies with the executive and a single party.
Across Europe, national courts recognise the judgements of courts in other member states, whether these involve commercial law, the European arrest warrant or child custody. Judges must assume that courts across the EU operate according to common values and principles set out in the European Union Treaty and in its Charter of Fundamental Rights. Once judges across the EU have reason to doubt whether courts in any member state provide effective judicial protection, the legal order on which the EU rests collapses.
Freedom house - How PIS captured Poland’s Courts

Constitutional Tribunal changes

It all began with the constitutional crisis four years ago. Constitutional crisis and the destruction of the rule of law In 2015, parliament changed the law on the Constitutional Tribunal, which rules on the constitutionality of legislation. The changes allowed them to annul the nominations of three judges made by the previous parliament and appoint their own. It shortened the terms of the tribunal's president and vice-president from nine to three years. The tribunal ruled the move unconstitutional in an open rebellion, but the dispute remains unresolved. Julia Przylebska - was illegally named the president of the Tribunal court by the president. And now Kaczynski, the PM have meetings at her house. Nice separation of power
There's too much to describe. For further info please visit the link. It is an amazing summary of the whole ordeal. timeline

Supreme Court changes

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said one of the most controversial reforms was to do with the Supreme court, which, among other duties, is responsible for confirming election results. The idea was to lower the age of retirement for Supreme Court justices from 70 to 65, but allow the Polish president to grant a five-year extension to whomever they deemed worthy. In 2019, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) — the EU's highest court —ruled this was illegal, after an interim decision ordered 20 already-sacked judges be reinstated. Of course, PIS chose 2 new Constitutional judges, A politician Pawlowicz with communistic past and Piotrowicz, also a politician and a prosecutor that was an active communist during the 80 that prosecuted Solidarnosc. Both of them are above 65 years old.

Ordinary court judges

There were also moves to try a similar tactic in the general court system for judges and public prosecutors, lowering the age of retirement for women to 60 and for men to 65, down from the current 67. Under the reforms the justice minister, who is appointed by the ruling party, would have the power to extend a judge's term. The laws were somewhat adjusted after pressure from the European Commission, but in November 2019 the ECJ shot down these laws, too, citing gender discrimination and political influence over the judiciary.

Disciplinary measures for judges

Another PiS addition allowed judges to be investigated and sanctioned for their court rulings. The disciplinary hearings and procedures were to be carried out by judges selected via parliament. These reforms were criticized by the European Commission because "judges are not insulated from political control and thus judicial independence is violated." The commission brought legal action against Poland on this matter in October 2019.

National Council of the judiciary takeover

In 2017 PiS remodeled the National Council of the Judiciary, which selects candidates for appointment as judges by the President of the Republic. This allowed it, in the short term, to control appointments to the Supreme Court – including to a newly created Disciplinary Chamber, which hears disciplinary cases against judges, and to a new Extraordinary Appeals Chamber, which adjudicates on electoral issues. Over time PiS’ take-over of the National Judicial Council allows it to reshape the entirety of the judiciary. Fifteen of the 25 members of the National Council of the Judiciary were previously elected by judges themselves, as is common practice across Europe for such bodies. These fifteen judges are now elected by the majority in the Sejm, the lower chamber of the Polish parliament. The other ten members of the National Council of the Judiciary are: four members from the Sejm itself (all four members of PiS), two members from the Senate, one representative of the President of the Republic, the Minister of Justice, the president of the Supreme Court and the president of the Supreme Administrative Court. In total 23 of the 25 positions are directly appointed by political authorities.
After the election of the new KRS, a publication of the list with the names of judges declaring their support for specific candidates was refused. The Supreme Administrative Court ruled that those names must be disclosed. However, the Chancellery of the Sejm has yet to carry out the NSA’s ruling. The Constitutional Tribunal (TK) and the President of the Personal Data Protection Office have been roped into guarding the secret. KRS destruction

Muzzle bill

The muzzle bill passed Dec 2019, victimize judges questioning the legitimacy of the government’s legal appointments, saying it is unlawful to “show hostility to other authorities of the Republic of Poland and its constitutional organs or to critisize the basic principles of the Republic of Poland.”The bill also delegalise the preliminary questions to the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU). The bill also allows to fire judges ( which is unconstitutional according to the Constitution). In average Ziobro dismissed a judge every day and a half from its position of president of court source

One of the worse Covid19 laws in EU.

Trampling Fundamental freedoms using a single ordnance and Critiquing the President will land you a year in jail. report.
In the latest special Covid19 law (already 4th lol) PIS smuggled an article straight from a communistic playbook about prosecuting people that critique the president. The sentence can be up to a year. They also smuggled a harsher law for abortions. Can someone tell me HOW it is related to Covid19? source
More Ruleoflaw

Political scandals

Illegal presidential pardon

Illegal presidential pardon for CBA chief Kaminski In 2013, Law and Justice (PiS) MP Mariusz Kamiński – who served as head of the anti-corruption agency from 2006 and 2009 – was found guilty of overstepping his powers. He was sentenced to three years in prison and was banned from holding public office for ten years. Polish President Andrzej Duda pardoned Kamiński even though he was still appealing his sentence at the time. The case against Kamiński was then discontinued. A supreme court judge said that the president interfered in the legal process because Kamiński was proven neither innocent nor guilty when he was pardoned, making a future ruling redundant. The judge said that the president can pardon someone after any final appeal has been heard “because then he is not interfering with the judiciary”.

Merging the General Prosecutor with the political Minister of Justice

The general prosecutor role was merged with the minister of justice Ziobro. source. This handed Ziobro and his subordinates greatly expanded power to politically interfere with rank-and-file prosecutors, their decisions, and their freedoms of speech and association. Poland Is Purging Its Prosecutors
200+ public prosecutors that are loyal to the Minister of Justice Ziobro (from PIS) All of them got promotions (or someone from their family) or pay raises. another list

Destroying the military

The creation of a territorial defense unit- a civilian army led by the ministry of defense to control “the situation inside Poland”. In addition, there was a purge of generals. and killing multibillion deals with France. About 37 generals and 47 colonels left. Why? Because they had to answer to a 27-year old assistant to the Defense Minister, former pharmacy assistant without a university degree. The Rzeczpospolita daily newspaper reported that Misiewicz was given a top communications job with PGZ ( largest defense consortiums in Central Europe) that pays $12,500 a month, huge sum in a country where the average pre-tax wage is about $1,150 a month. source
PIS decides to overhaul 40-years old t-72 instead of investing in German tanks. Not enough ammunition, uniforms NVG and other gadget went to the above unit,
In 2015, the Defence minister Macierewicz raided the Nato center in Warsaw at 1am to take control of documents and place their man at the helm

The ministry of Justice is funding trolls to destroy judges

Ziobro-Piebiak paid Troll scandal The Onet news portal published a report alleging that Deputy Justice Minister Łukasz Piebiak “arranged and controlled” an online campaign against Judge Krystian Markiewicz, the head of Iustitia, a judicial organization critical of the government’s efforts to restructure the judicial system, as well as against other inconvenient judges. According to the Onet report, Piebiak operated and financed an online campaign by a woman called Emilia who allegedly sent over 2,000 letters and emails about Markiewicz to other judges as well as to pro-government right-wing media. The messages contained fabricated, semi-confirmed and gossipy details of the judge’s personal life. According to Onet, Emilia obtained Markiewicz’s personal address from Piebiak so she could send him one of the letters.

Taking over the state media

State media was taken over by PIS and is using mass propaganda and here Not only they are a propaganda tube but they also offend polish citizens ie – translation: defenders of paedophiles and alimonies-takers are the ones against judiciary reforms. They call every peaceful protest as a coup
The same can be said about the GUS – general statistical bureau. It is controlled by PIS and it is known to “change” metrics so every Inflation or unemployment metrics can’t be trusted.

LBGT-free zones and Xenophobia.

Fear against refugees and calls for xenophobia. A leaked draft of a new Polish migration policy discriminates against Muslims, ranks foreigners according to ethnicity and breaches human rights
PIS is supporting LGBT free zones where a thrid of Poland is declared as LGBT-free. During the presidential elections in 2020 Gay “ideology” is worse than communism, says Duda - PIS president . another source

Destroying education and HealthCare.

PIS cancels the in vitro program Polish government program that covered most of the in vitro costs was immediately cut by the Law and Justice Party when it came to power in late 2015, even though Poland has one of the lowest birth rates in the EU. Catholic Church opposition to IVF is widely seen as one factor in the Polish government's decision.
PIS also increased the minimum wage at the beginning of 2020. It created a weird paradox where a teacher and a starting MD is earning less than the minimal wage because they get paid from public money and the minimal wage change is for the private sector. And PIS wants to ban sex ed by labeling teachers as gay activists and pedophiles. Critics say Poland’s governing Law and Justice Party is wrecking the education system for political gain — and students are suffering.

No one cares for the environment.

Destruction of the oldest European forest in Poland by Minister of Environment Szyszko The Bialowieza Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage site that sprawls across the border between Poland and Belarus, occupying almost 580 square miles of woodland and providing home to rare European wood bison among others. At least 10,000 trees are thought to have been felled in Białowieża, since the Polish environment minister, Jan Szyzko tripled logging limits there in 2016. The EU’s highest court has ruled that Poland’s logging in the Unesco-protected Białowieża forest is illegal, potentially opening the door to multi-million euro fines.
“Our (water) resources are comparable to those of Egypt,” it said in the report bearing the ominous title: “Poland, European Desert”

Nepotism and colleagues in state-owned companies

PIS won the elections by wanting to fight nepotism. The most famous was “24yo Misiewicz, a former pharmacy assistant without a university degree was in the defense industry under Macierewicz. The apparent favoritism has raised ethics concerns in a party that won office promising to fight corruption.” source There is even a webpage listing more than 1000 cases of nepotism under PIS Pisiewicze
Latest data show 162M PLN to 84 PIS oligarchs and Colleagues

Illegal budget for 2017

The 2017 budget "was adopted" not in the Sejm assembly hall, but in a smaller room where the so-called parliamentary session was held immediately as a follow-up to the meeting of the parliamentary causus of PIS, where no reliable counting of vates was possible, and with many allegations taht the opposition MPs were not allowed in. [Constitutional Democracy in Crisis?, Oxfoord, 2018, p.268]

Ex-communists in PIS ranks. And PIS is very anti-left and anti-PRL.

They are accusing the opposition – PO - to consist mostly of ex-communists or communistic party members or collaborators. The issue is that most members of PO fought against the communism and spent months/years in prison in the ’80. On the other hand, the PIS party members scarcely fought for polish liberty and some of its party members are former communistic party members or communistic prosecutors like Piotrowicz! Some Polish TC judge are also ex-PRL members. Here is a list in polish of all current PIS party members who served as PRL members during the communistic era. So, PIS is fighting against itself. Another list with 20 names of ex-party members now in PIS

Funding the Catholic church with public money

PIS is very Pro-Catholic, most of their voters are devout Catholics. So it is no surprise that PIS is funding religious orgs from public money. Since Law and Justice came to power in 2015, Father Rydzyk’s businesses have received at least $55 million in subsidies from at least 10 ministries and state companies. His Radio Maryja station, which reaches millions and is often the sole source of information for many older voters in rural Poland, offers a daily diet of horror stories about a world without faith, where gay people control the political agenda, universities are corrupted by “neo-Marxists,” and the Roman Catholic Church is under mortal threat. Rydzyk Embroiled in Corruption Allegations
Hiding Pedophilia. Map of 259 victims of catholic pedophilia. When a documentary was released before recent local elections revealing devastating examples of how priests sexually abused children and how church officials covered it up, many in PIS saw it not as evidence of an institution that lost its way, but one that needed to be defended. Piotrowicz, the above communist prosecutor, dismissed in 2001 a case against a priest accused of raping six girls.
Polish PIS president Duda pardons a paedophile that raped his own daughter. He makes the pardon a week before elections

Smolensk commission

The so-called assassination of Kaczynski's twin president brother in Smolensk created 90M PLN of costs. PIS created a "cult" around his death and even created a special commission that would prove it was an assassination. Kaczynski was using it on every occasion Don't wipe your treacherous mugs with .... Ofc they didn’t prove anything and they buried the topic. Every 10th of every month for 3 years, PIS party leader Kaczynski was making a "show" commemorating his dead twin brother. He was using the police to secure his demonstration even if he has no lawful power (he is neither a president, neither the prime minister). New law expanding police surveillance and the police is getting raises after raises to keep them happy. The commemorations, the commission and the damages (paid only to the politicians’ families, not to the crew) amounted to 91M PLN.

The welfare revolution

PIS is also very pro-family. The party is giving away 500zl per month for every kid. In short, it has “bought” the elections. The polish economy is unable to sustain such an endeavor roots of populism. And it costs the economy 80B PLN between 2016 and 2019. The best part? Rate of births is negative for the last couple of years and inflation is still growing. According to the PIS Stats bureau it is 3.5% and growing. However, many journalists made their own baskets of normal good and services and the inflation is closer to 10%. Additionally there is a growing debt that PIS tries to hide by shifting some debt into other Funds. One of them is the “Solidarity fund” that is not counted in the overall polish GDP, that is to support people with disabilities will pay for the 13th and 14th pension of people 65+.

Funding propaganda and trolls

Computational Propaganda in Poland: Russian troll factories
PIS bought the Pegasus spyware to spy on its citizens In September 2018, private broadcaster TVN24 reported that Poland’s state audit body, NIK, was questioning an outlay of over 33 million zloty (€7.6 million euro) by the Justice Fund, a government fund to help victims of crime. According to TVN, the money went toward the purchase of a “new system to spy on telephones and computers, the most expensive system in the history of Polish secret services.” Reports that the covertly purchased system could be Pegasus — a top-performing spyware that is impossible to track — surfaced last week.

Funding public TV stations

Polish public TV stations should be impartial and public. Not favoring any party nor government and give the same screen time to every party equally. Unfortunately, there was a purge of journalists the moment PIS won the election and the propaganda is stalin-like. Look at this graph how it changed. Polish TVP is the mouthpiece of the govt. In 2020 PIS voted to give an additional 2B pln per year for 5 years to public tv.
Public Main TV making fun of US ambassador by reading the tweet with a derogatory accent

Scandals

PIS has hundreds of scandals that each would destroy a modern government. They defrauded billions of PLN over the years, put 1000’s of family members in different state-owned companies. Below are listed the main sexual and financial scandals.
  1. Sex hotel of the head of the Audit office Marian Banaś , a Law and Justice (PiS) politician and recently appointed chief of Poland’s Supreme Audit Office has been heavily embroiled in a corruption scandal, another to hit the ruling party just weeks before the country votes in a parliamentary election. Mr Banaś served as finance minister from June to August this year, and is a key figure in the party. Mr Banaś concealed his possession of a tenement house in Krakow from his financial disclosures. This property was then revealed to have deep running connections with a local, criminally-run escort agency. He claimed that the house was given to him by an old friend whom he met in the Home Army, which he then renovated. In his disclosures he claimed he would sell the house, which never happened. Banaś claims that this was due to the buyer’s inability to get a loan. Investigations have further revealed that Mr Banaś agreed to rent the property for 5000 zloty a month, 10,000 zloty lower than its estimated market value, according to Gazeta Wyborcza. Just as the scandal could not apparently get any worse for Mr Banaś, further investigation by journalist Bertold Kittel revealed criminal links. When Mr Kittel entered the property he found at the reception an infamous Krakow criminal known as one of the brothers K – Wiesław or Janusz, who control escort agencies in the region. While still under investigation, there have been suggestions of contact between the two.
  2. "Alleged" Pedophila and Sex trafficking scandal of House speaker Wirtualna Polska learned the contents of the message of CBA officer Wojciech J. to the prosecutor's office about the failure of the head of the CBA, Ernest Bejda. In the background is a lost record with a recording of one of the leading PiS politicians who should have sex with a minor Ukrainian girl lost. His name falls on the document. In the message, Wojciech J. refers to several reports that he was the head of the office in connection with the "unauthorized access to his armored cabinet during his absence" submitted. From this vault, a record should be lost in escort agencies from the Podkarpacie region. One of the leading PiS politicians should have sex with a young Ukrainian in the recording. The statement signed by lawyer Beata Bosak-Kruczek mentions the name of Sejm spokesman Marek Kuchciński.
  3. Health minister Szumowski alleged to have bought £1m of PPE from ski instructor friend during pandemic. And givng away £65m grants to companies run by brother public anger has exploded after Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza reported that Szumowski bought masks with fake certificates from a skiing instructor who is friends with his businessman brother, Marcin. Poland’s Health Ministry reportedly spent five million zloty (£1m) on 120,000 FFP-2 type face masks and 20,000 surgical masks that were later found not to meet safety standards, Politico says. The company that sold the masks was registered on the 30 of March and won the govt. contract on the same day. Critics have also questioned Szumowski’s previous dealings in government. Polish news network tvn24 reports that while serving as deputy science minister in 2016-17, he gave 300 million zloty (£60m) in grants from Poland’s National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) to OncoArendi Therapeutics, a research company run by his brother. Another company in which Szumowski was a shareholder, Life Science Innovation (LSI), was reportedly given a 24 million zloty (£5m) NCBR grant just days after he took up the ministerial post.
  4. Same Health minister Szumowski bought 1.2 thousand ventilators for PLN 200 million from a company owned by an arms dealer, not a single device was delivered

For questions specifically concerning bootlegs or vendor legitimacy, please ask in the Bootleg Megathread.
NSFW & Spoiler Guidelines
  • For Self Posts: include a bolded NSFW note next to links in that post.
  • For Links to sites/images: If the figure is NSFW, or the website has any NSFW content (including ads) be sure to tag your post NSFW and use the appropriate link flair.
Bootlegs
Any collection posts containing bootlegs, comments advocating buying bootlegs, or links to sites selling bootlegs, recasts, or unlicensed merchandise will be removed.
People often ask about the legitimacy and/or safety of a number of websites which sell large resin statues. The more commonly-asked of those deal primarily in resins from studios which do not have a license from the Japanese IP holders to produce merchandise. Therefore links to those sites are not permitted here. Another sign is if MyFigureCollection doesn't list the either the statue, its manufacturer, or the shop it's being sold on.

Buying & Shipping

1. What’s the best place to buy my anime figures from?
That’s going to depend a lot on what works for you, but most people around here buy them from Amiami, Big in Japan, Hobby Search, HobbyLink Japan, or Tokyo Otaku Mode. If none of those work for you for whatever reason, there’s a list of reputable retailers in the sidebar that you can check out at any time. Be extra careful when ordering figures from websites like Amazon or ebay, as there are a lot of bootlegs on those sites. Don’t be afraid to ask in our Bootleg Megathread if you’re unsure.
2. What differences are there between the shipping options I get from most Japanese shops?
Below is a rundown of the main shipping choices you’ll get at most retailers. Keep in mind that if an order is large enough you will be forced to use one of the more expensive options, as SAL shipments have lower size and weight restrictions.
  • Unregistered SAL: Sometimes referred to as uSAL, is usually the cheapest method. It does not come with any tracking or insurance. Usually takes up 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • Registered SAL: Sometimes referred to as rSAL, is insured for the declared value up to 6,000 yen. It comes with a tracking number and usually takes 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • EMS: This method of shipping is much faster than either SAL options, usually arriving within a week of shipment. EMS shipments are insured for the declared value up to 2,000,000 yen.
  • Airmail
  • E-packet
  • Surface: Shops don't offer this very often. It's an actual cargo ship and slow as a result.
  • DHL: Becoming more available as an alternative to EMS on AmiAmi and other sites. Can be less expensive than EMS and of comparable speed, but may be more reliant on the specific geographical area being shipped to. Offers their own tracking.
3. I placed two+ orders for figures at different times. Will my items be shipped together, or will I have to pay shipping twice?
Most shops will ask you to pay shipping on a per-order basis, but here are some that will allow combined shipping:
  • Amiami: You can combine orders here, as long as the orders ship in the same month. It doesn’t matter if the item is new or preowned. Any preorders that are set for that month can also be combined with other orders for that month. However, be aware that if the preorder gets delayed, Amiami will remove that item from that month’s shipment and place it on a new order. To combine orders on Amiami, use the “Combine Orders” feature under “My Account”.
  • Hobby Search: Hobby Search will let you combine orders that release in the same month, but you cannot combine in stock items with preorders. If you want to combine multiple preorders, or multiple in stock items, you can do so using the “Order Recombination” feature on your account page.
  • HobbyLink Japan: At HLJ, you have the option to send paid orders to their “Private Warehouse”, where you can store them for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to ship the items, you simply select which items to ship and HLJ will combine them into one shipment for you. To use this, just select the “Private Warehouse” option as shipping when you order.
  • GSC Web Shop: Here you’ll pay a flat 2,000 yen fee per order. It doesn’t matter how many items you put in your order, or how many different months the items release in. They will charge you 2,000 yen and ship all items as they release. The exception to this rule is their Wonder Festival exclusive items. Those can only be placed in the same order as other Wonder Festival items.
If you’re unsure about whether or not a shop we haven’t listed will combine your orders, please refer to their individual FAQ’s.
4. When will I get charged for my preorder?
Most Japanese shops charge you once the item is in stock and ready for shipment. When that happens, they will send you an email asking for payment. Some shops (mostly overseas ones), will allow you to pay for the item up front though, if you’d like. A few with that option are:
  • Big in Japan (Japanese store)
  • Tokyo Otaku Mode
  • Anime Island
  • Crunchyroll
Keep in mind that overseas stores will likely get the figure a few months after Japanese ones, so pay attention to the release date stated on the website you are buying from so as to avoid that confusion.
5. Should I expect to pay customs fees when importing figures?
That depends on where you live. Here’s a quick rundown:
  • Australia: 10% GST is now assessed up front.
  • Canada: Minimum declared value for charges is around CAD$20 for regular shipments, and CAD$60 for gifts (gifting something only seems to lower the declared value by about CAD$40, not deplete it completely). When using Amiami, try their Small Air Packet option. It comes with tracking, gets there in about the same time as EMS, and is better at avoiding customs.
  • Europe: Using EMS raises your chance of getting charged for customs. SAL can still avoid customs in some countries, but generally gets checked in the UK now if the items are above the threshold. Amiami offers a shipping service called “Small Air Packet” that is really good for avoiding customs when you are only shipping one or two figures. Small Air Packet usually takes about the same amount of time as EMS, and still comes with tracking. The minimum declared value for customs charges in the Europe is pretty low- around £15 (£36 for gifts) / €20.
  • Mexico: Minimum declared value for customs fees is USD$300 for shipments by post, and USD$50 for shipments by courier.
  • United States: A shipment has to have a declared value of USD$2,000 before customs starts hitting you with fees, so you most likely won’t have to worry about them at all.
6. The figure I want is an exclusive, how do I go about ordering one outside of Japan?
You have three options for this:
A. Big in Japan is known to stock exclusive figures and ship to other countries. Usually the price is higher because they build in their proxy fees, but it’s easier than worrying about using a forwarder or proxy service. If you live in the US, Crunchyroll, Right Stuf, and Tokyo Otaku Mode also get exclusives sometimes, but out of the states the shipping can get expensive.
B. Forwarding Services: A forwarder is someone who you ship an exclusive item to so that they can forward the package on to you, usually for a flat fee + shipping. When using a forwarder you still make the purchase yourself, and enter their address into the shipping field. When the box arrives at the forwarder they will then stick your address onto the package and send it on its way.
Some popular forwarders are:
Be sure to read each sites instructions on forwarding carefully!
C. Proxy Services: With a proxy, you tell them what the item you’re looking for is and they will purchase it in your stead. This is handy for when a company doesn’t accept foreign credit cards, or you’re having trouble navigating a Japanese website.
Some popular proxies are:
Again, be sure you thoroughly read through each sites proxy instructions.
7. I see a bunch of really cheap figures that ship from China on ebay. Are those okay to buy?
Generally, no. They’re most likely bootlegs. If you want a second opinion on that, feel free to ask in the Bootleg Megathread that’s always stickied at the top of the sub.
8. What’s a bootleg, and how can I avoid buying them?
A bootleg is a counterfeit figure often made using rejected molds of the official product. They are usually priced significantly lower than the genuine article, and in order to make their profit, bootleggers use lower quality materials and have less attention to detail- resulting in a substandard figure.
The Bootleg Megathread that I mentioned in question 7 is a great tool to avoid buying any bootlegs. It has a few tips and tricks to avoiding them to begin with, and a few more on how to spot them if you’re worried you might already own one.
9. Does anyone know when figure X is going to be released? How do I know if it was delayed?
My Figure Collection (sometimes referred to as MFC) does an excellent job of staying on top of information like release dates and delays. If you’re curious about an upcoming figures release date, check there first. This information can be found directly under the “Releases” section on a figure’s entry. If you only see a month and a year in that section, it means the release date has not yet been announced by the manufacturer, and there is still a chance the figure could be delayed.
If you make an account on MFC you can also subscribe to comments, changes, and pictures via a checkbox on the right hand side of a figure’s listing. Subscribing to any of these things will allow MFC to send you an email anytime the subscription in question updates. Subscribing to “changes” is a great way to keep up with release dates and delays, among other things.
10. The figure I want is long sold out at normal retailers! What’s the best place to pick it up in the aftermarket?
A list of reputable retailers can be found under the “Shops” section of the /AnimeFigures sidebar. They all sell legitimate products, and many of them also sell figures second hand. However, the most frequently suggested second hand sites are Mandarake and Amiami- who has a preowned section that they update every night save Sundays and Japanese holidays around 1PM JST and again around 6PM JST.
AmiAmi grades their pre-owned items on a letter scale. The general consensus from buyers is that their ratings are conservative, so unless the item and/or packaging is specifically indicated as having significant flaws, pre-owned items from them are usually in at least as good a condition as their rating suggests.
Note: When you search Mandarake, you’ll get the best results by using the Japanese characters for whatever you are searching. If you don’t know them, you can find them on MFC by clicking on any of the “details” in that figure’s listing.
11. Amiami has a figure I’m interested in labeled as “For sale in Japan only”. Does this mean I can’t order it without a proxy or forwarder?
No, you can still order it. Amiami’s English site has that warning on many items, and it’s mostly meant to inform you that this product was made for a Japanese market, and as such, will have Japanese speaking/writing in it- so don’t expect any instructions to be in English. If Amiami doesn’t want foreigners buying a certain product, they won’t even list it on their English site.

Displaying Your Figures

12. What display cases do you recommend?
If you live near an Ikea try out one of these:
*If you decided on a Detolf, you might find that there is a lot of wasted space. Here are a few tutorials on raising the shelves or and adding extra ones in.
If you don’t live near an Ikea, Amazon has a few display options, though they are more expensive. Also keep an eye on your local Craigslist (or your country’s equivalent) and stores near you that are closing up.
13. What lighting do you guys recommend?
Ikea’s Dioder LED strips are often suggested. They come in white or muti-colored.
Most hardware stores carry something similar though, if you don’t live by an Ikea. Just make sure that the lights don’t get too hot!
14. What are those clear plastic boxes that I see under everyone’s figures in their collection posts, and where can I get them?
Those are called risers. Most of us use standard acrylic risers like these. Some other, easy to find things that have been suggested are:
Check your local hobby store for the first 2 options, or your local hardware store if you want to make your own.
Another common suggestion is to visit The Container Store if you have one near you. They have a lot of things to choose from that can suit a variety of needs. Be sure to check out their standard acrylic risers, their Amac boxes, and the various display cases they sell (baseball cases, mini car cases. hockey puck cases, etc).
15. Should I keep my figures sealed?
That is, of course, up to you really, but here are a few things to keep in mind when debating this question:
  • Keeping it sealed can actually damage your figure. PVC figures usually have something called plasticizer in them, and that plasticizer needs to be able to breath. If a PVC figure isn’t exposed to oxygen, after a period of time the plasticizer starts to break down and form a sticky substance on the surface of the figure. Simply opening your figures and taking them out of the box prevents this from happening. If you happen to find plasticizer goo on one of your figures, Kahotan has a handy guide for dealing with it.
  • Unlike some other figure markets, keeping an anime figure sealed won’t raise its value by a whole lot. In fact, because of the plasticizer problem mentioned above, your figure could actually be in better condition if you open it versus keeping it sealed.

Finding the Right Figure(s) for You

16. There are so many figure companies! Who makes good figures?!
Obviously this is a very subjective question, but as a general starting point, here are a few well renowned figure companies:
  • Alter
  • Max Factory
  • Good Smile Company
  • Kotobukiya (usually hit or miss for people. Use your best judgement based off of the prototype)
  • Aquamarine
  • Flare
  • Stronger
17. I really love “series X / character X”- how can I check if any figures were ever made for it?
My Figure Collection can be your best friend here. Simply do a search on the name of the series or character using the search bar located at the top right of the screen, and all associated figures pop up!
Alternatively, if you’re looking at a figure’s MFC entry, most of the text under the “Details” section can be clicked on and used to run a search.
18. How can I commission a custom figure?
None of the major figure companies (Alter, Kotobukiya, Good Smile Company, etc.) will take a commission for a single figure. This thread has a few websites in it that you can check out, or you can look into garage kits. Some kit painters would be willing to resculpt, frankenstein together, or otherwise modify kits for the right price.
If you're looking for help completing a garage kit, /brushforhire may be useful.

Keeping Up with New Announcements

19. How can I keep up with figure news (announcements, updates, etc.)?
Most people use a MFC combined with any or all of the following news sites:
To use MFC for this I’ll quote question #9.
Most companies have one or more Twitter accounts. Some examples: Good Smile Company sales, Good Smile's USA branch, Max Factory, AmiAmi Hobby News.
20. Everyone’s excited about something called Wonfes….. what the heck is that?!
WonFes (short for Wonder Festival) is a biannual figure expo where many figure producers (both large and small) show off new sculpts and updates to figures already under way. Most companies save their most exciting announcements for WonFes, so we all look forward to the expo whenever it rolls around! Winter Wonder Festival is usually held in February, while Summer Wonder Festival is usually in July. The event has also spread to Shanghai, in the late spring.
21. One or two (or 15) figures were announced at WonFes that I’m really excited about! How can I keep track of their progress once the event is over?
MFC is always really quick about getting new WonFes announcements (or any others throughout the year, for that matter) listed in their database, so we suggest using that. To find a figure from the event you can search any number of things, including the name of the character or the name of the show. You can also use the tag search to search “WonderFestival 20xx_[season]” to see all items announced at that event.

2020.10.23 01:26 ConorKostick Peter Linebaugh Interview

Peter Linebaugh Interview

Peter Linebaugh is a radical historian best known for his work on commoners in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries
Johnny Flynn of Independent Left got the opportunity to interview one of the most insightful radical thinkers of our times. They cover Peter Linebaugh's books, of course, but also how the historian sees the BLM movement and the state's response to COVID. Linebaugh lived in Dublin for a short period and the interview touches on Irish history in several places.
Johnny Flynn: The first question I had to ask you was about the subtitle to your Red Round Globe Hot Burning: a tale at the crossroads of commons and closure, of love and terror, of race and class, and of Kate and Ned Despard. I saw you did a video that is up on the P. M. Press blog where you were talking about crossroads and you referenced Robert Johnson and the idea of being at the crossroads. The time of Edward Despard and Catherine Despard was one of commons and closure and race and class: the beginnings of this horrible white supremacy that we’re beset with now (with all these kinds of fascist berserkers that are all over the world gaining strength). The Despard’s attempt to overthrow the industrial capitalist system and restore the commons failed, and we ourselves are at the crossroads now between our plague-ridden current times and what they call the Anthropocene or the warming climate. Could you talk about that a little bit? How the two are related, if that even makes sense as a question?
Peter Linebaugh: It does make sense. The Anthropocene is basically putting carbon dioxide into the stratosphere, so taking what was underneath the earth and putting it on top of the earth has really messed the earth up, to be simple about it. But Despard, of course, was executed or hanged and decapitated in 1803 and this is at a time when – based on ice samples from the Antarctica – some geologists date the beginning of the pollution of the stratosphere with CO2. Carbon dioxide that’s still up there of course, that has led to global warming, planetary warming, species destruction, desertification and so on. So this is a planetary crisis now that we face.
The USA – or Turtle Island as I’ve taken to calling this part of the planet (based on the first names of the first peoples here, they say Turtle Island) – the USA is basically a product of Despard’s time, that is the 1790s. That’s the same as the UK, the United Kingdom. This was also the time of the Anthropocene. You take these two Uniteds – United Kingdom, United States of America – and try to understand how they are related to the factory and then how is the factory related to the plantation.
Taking the republic, the Anthropocene, white supremacy, the modes of production and put them together and it’s a massive attack, it’s a massive counterrevolution, I would even say, on the planet and on social life of not only two-footed critters but horses, livestock, other species. This is really mind blowing in the sense that it contradicts so many standard narratives, you know, of the scientific revolution, of industrial progress, of secular life, of the enlightenment.
I said four things. Let’s see: Anthropocene; the republics; white supremacy; modes of production. I’m sure I’m missing a few other fundamental pillars that had their foundations knit together in the 1790s. Thank you for remembering Robert Johnson and the crossroads because it was that blues tune – or rather the blues man – that was definitely in my mind. This Robert Johnson, the blues man from the Mississippi Delta, who was said to have made a pact with the devil at the crossroads where he was granted genius at the guitar and in music at the price of his soul. And far be it from me to do a sociology of the blues but it is one of the cultural expressions from Turtle Island that arose out of the plantation and against white supremacy.
The dominant religion of white supremacy was this dualistic view of the devil versus Yahweh or a king of the universe, and Robert Johnson defied it in his music. And I see a direct relationship between that and William Blake. William Blake’s Visions of the Daughters of Albion is a beautiful meditation against white supremacy, against political domination, against the love of the body, against Eros, against the alienation of labour. It’s a great poem inspired by the Haitian revolt of 1791.
I’m trying to write a tale of the crossroads and I see that in Edward Despard, the last of many children of an Anglo Irish in County Queens or County Laois, and in Catherine Despard, who was really totally forgotten in history and was a descendant of Africans. They met in the Caribbean or somewhere in North America, maybe Central America, and they formed a revolutionary team, a partnership in the age of revolution, in the age of the United Irishmen and the age of the Haitian revolt, against which I think the United Kingdom and the USA were both formed. I see Ireland and Haiti, or the Caribbean islands, the Caribbean plantation, as kind of the one side of the barbells and the other side of the barbells is the UK and the USA, but again, this is perhaps an undialectical image.

The USA and the UK are past their sell-by date

Johnny Flynn: I remember your extraordinarily provocative statement in one of your talks where you were talking about the United Kingdom and United States. You said that they were both formed as a kind of destruction of the commons, especially in the case of the United States and the United Kingdom: let’s say against the 1798 revolution or attempted revolution of the United Irishmen. So the restoration of the commons would be predicated upon the destruction of what we know of as the United Kingdom and the United States. If I remember correctly, in one of your talks you said something like that?
Peter Linebaugh: I think the USA and the UK are definitely hanging on, gasping for life towards the end of their sell-by date. They’re no longer political organizations that can solve the problems that are facing us, beginning with the effects of the Anthropocene or planetary warming. Their answer, at least, has been to intensify class inequalities and to intensify white supremacy and they’re totally at a loss about what to do against very vibrant forces from the assemblies of the Occupy era from 2011, to the attempts at, quote, ‘socialist constitutions’ in Latin America, against the George Floyd uprising of this last summer. They’re not able to meet these challenges.
Continues: Peter Linebaugh interview.

2020.10.22 16:47 nicotelbee Some advice for any entrepreneurs out there who are debating whether to start their own business.

[TL;DR] This is a condensed version of my original blog post. If you fancy, you can read the full version here.
Our startup, telbee, launched its first product in July: a voice recording and messaging platform called Vox. Following our launch, we were beyond excited to be voted #1 Product of the Day on Product Hunt, so we feel like we know a bit about launching a successful tech startup, and might have some nuggets of wisdom to share!
Today, I want to share with you how we got started - to give you a little more insight into what goes into launching a tech startup and hopefully inspire you to start making your vision a reality too.

#1 Come up with a great concept‍

Of course, the first step to launching a startup is to have an idea. The idea doesn’t need to be fully formed - just a thought about how something can be improved, or how things could be different. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll find your best ideas come from addressing a personal dissatisfaction or frustration - something that you’ve noticed is missing in your day-to-day life.
I also believe the best tech startup concepts are ones that are founded on the simple premise of actively making a difference in people’s lives.

#2 Do your research! ‍

At the very beginning of my startup’s journey, the research stage involved having a lot of conversations with industry experts and consumers, finding out whether my idea was feasible, how it would work on a practical level, who would derive the most value from the product and what they would use it for. You may need to spend a few months on this part of the process!

#3 Start growing your team ‍

Having founded a couple of businesses on my own before, I already recognised and understood the importance of having a team - however small - right from the get-go.
And ultimately, I believe that building a strong and successful team is about finding the right kind of synergies and complementarities with the people you work with every day. ‍‍

#4 Develop your product‍

By now, I’m sure you’ve all heard Lean Startup’s golden rule of launching a new business: Start with a minimum viable product.
In general, this would still be my advice. However, for us, it was a little more complicated than that. We were asking our early adopters to put our technology in front of their customers - rather than simply using it behind the scenes. This meant that our product really needed to be fully robust from day one.
As you can imagine, creating a product that businesses could be proud to introduce their customers to was no small task. Nobody ever said developing a piece of technology - and I had to prepare to make some very tricky decisions along the way!

#5 Refine and test ‍

‍Our first real testing experience came in March 2020 - right around the time when the UK went into complete lockdown as a result of COVID-19. In response to the pandemic, we started a campaign called ‘Bless Our Heroes’ (BlessOurHeroes.org), where we used our voice technology to help raise money for the National Emergencies Trust.
After receiving a huge amount of constructive feedback from the campaign, Bless Our Heroes effectively became our first beta. This campaign gave us the opportunity to continue refining and enhancing our product, and was our company’s proudest example to date of reacting quickly to being thrown a curveball.
Our official closed beta came a couple of months later in June, and we had almost a hundred early adopters take part. After a couple of weeks of receiving helpful and extremely encouraging feedback, we were ready to move Vox into its open beta stage. ‍

#6 Launch your product into the world!‍

We launched on Product Hunt in July and were absolutely delighted - and overwhelmed - by the way our product was received. Launching on Product Hunt deserves an article/post in its own right, so I would be happy to share that with you if any of you would be interested.

Conclusion

Building and launching a startup business from scratch certainly isn’t quick, cheap or always easy - but if you’re willing to put in the graft, I can tell you from experience that it’s worth it.

Building and launching a startup business from scratch certainly isn’t quick, cheap or always easy - but if you’re willing to put in the graft, I can tell you from experience that it’s worth it.

2020.10.22 16:42 nicotelbee Some advice for any entrepreneurs out there who are debating whether to start their own business.

Launching on Product Hunt deserves an article/post in its own right, so I would be happy to share that with you if any of you would be interested.‍

2020.10.22 03:03 wntk "WASPIs (Women Against State Pension Inequality) and Votes". A blog takes a critical look at this campaign which has fought to delay changes to equalise the state pension age for men and woman in the UK (November 2019). Highlights how the change of dates also affected men, but that was ignored.

2020.10.21 23:04 yer-what PSA: Rishi owes you some cash, claim some tax back

As we had to work from home during this tax year (April 2020-), we are entitled to claim working from home allowance.
Presumably to simplify things with millions of claims, HMRC have decided that if you have had to work from home at any point, you get the allowance for the whole year.
The flat £6 per week tax relief the whole year is worth £65ish for most of us (basic rate taxpayers). It's really easy, you can do it all online, takes 10 minutes, I used a P60 and a driving license to sign up.
https://www.gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees/working-at-home
... And once you're signed up, you can use the same login details to claim back the tax paid on union fees dating up to 4 years ago. Another nice little bonus - should be enough for a couple of Christmas presents.

2020.10.21 20:53 Kidwellj Anyone recommend a smart plug roundup?

I thought I'd get myself a smart plug with energy monitoring for my home server, so I hopped on over to the integrations page and poked around until I found a few options and got myself the cheapest one, e.g. a TP-Link HS110 Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug. Installation was straight forward, but getting my HA install to detect the plug has been impossible. A half hour on the forums has revealed that there are chronic problems with that integration which don't seem likely to be resolved any time soon, so I probably may as well just pivot to another device. But figuring out which UK smart plugs have energy monitoring, and of those the current state of HA integration, has been pretty challenging.
Here's my question - can anyone recommend a summary of existing devices out there, e.g. some sort of roundup blog post or spreadsheet that is reasonably up to date, and has a list of devices and indications of how the HA integration is working? It's worth mentioning I'm in the UK, so not as interested in sites that just focus on USA standard devices. Any help most appreciated.

2020.10.21 09:47 Muryum My cousin got engaged and I'm a little jealous

I 21f love my cousin 21f and we are similar in a lot of things. We are part of a large muslim family who have a history with strong faith and no disobeying. I grew up in the UK and I've met the love of my life and we have been secretly dating for 2 years. I can't tell anyone about him because he's atheist so recently when my cousin got engaged with the man she loves, I felt really really happy for her but a little bit bitter that I can't tell my family about my partner or hell would arise. I feel like a bad person for feeling this blog of jealousy when I should be celebrating my cousins engagement. I'm really close with my family and I get on very well with my extended family so I don't want to leave them for my boyfriend, I also don't want to cause lots of pain and sadness to my parents because religion is so high up in their priorities. I'm just thinking when? When will I be able to introduce my boyfriend? When can I have a nice family dinner with my boyfriend there? It just makes me sad that the only difference between me and my cousin is that she found someone who's muslim and I haven't

2020.10.19 18:16 SureAINicolas IMPORTANT UPDATE ON THE NOVEL: Problem With the The Pre-Orders

Current status: As of now, only hardcovers ordered via BookDepository seem to be affected. I'll keep a close eye on this. If it's just the BookDepository sales, I should be able to replace them in full.
Hi guys, Nicolas here. After a majestic fuck up with my printing company IngramSpark (never publish with these guys), it now seems that everybody who ordered their copy of Dreams of the Dying via BookDepository will get a review copy of either the hardcover or the paperback. This is a preliminary version that still looks nice and has a close-to-final text, but minus the final proofing and tweaking pass.
I’ve been on and off for the phone with Ingram for hours on end, and apparently, they can do nothing because they’ve already shipped the books. Of course, they won’t take them back, as they stated – in some hidden blog-post – that pre-order books print ten days prior to the pub date. My biggest fear is that this will happen for all Amazon.com orders too, and I’m 90% sure it already did, even though the people at Ingram weren’t able to say so. I’ve asked them to disable distribution at once, but even that might take a few days to process.
This is a huge mess. I’ve been scared to death something like this would happen and now it did. It feels like I’m punishing you guys for putting your faith in me by placing a pre-order, and that’s fucking heartbreaking.
Just to be clear, the copies you’ll be getting aren’t dummies. They are the ones the press received, and they look pretty and the appendix should be final, but they still have a couple of typos (despite an extensive copyedit and proofing pass), and some bits aren’t as good as they should be. I’ll try to at least hold back the Amazon pre-orders, but for the reasons stated above, I have my doubts that’s gonna work.
What does this mean? Frankly, I don’t know yet. I’m trying to figure this out. It certainly fucks up my launch plan big time (pardon my French), as it means there won’t be one “big day of sales” to climb the ranks. I don't care about that at this point, though—I mostly just don’t want you, my biggest supporters, to get anything except the final product. What I’d like to do is to send everyone who pre-ordered and is now getting a preview copy a free proper copy, but chances are I simply can’t afford that. I’m not making any money off the pre-ordered paperbacks because I underestimated the page count and now making -$1 for each pre-order sale. The best I can hope for is to break even.
Once I know how big the damage is, I’ll run some calculations and get back in touch with you—but I’ll do everything to make sure you get nothing but the final product. I really tried my best to avoid all the pitfalls, but IngramSpark is a fucking catastrophe. I should have paid heed to those 2.0 stars on Trustpilot.
For now, all I can say is that I’m so, so sorry. I had many ideas of how this launch would go, but botching it before it even happened wasn’t one of them.
Exhausted greetings from Germany, Nicolas
Edit: at the very least, people who received a review copy will get the free, finalized eBook on top. I'll see if I can sort out something else too.

2020.10.19 17:04 azoundria2 Bob The Magic Custodian

Summary: Everyone knows that when you give your assets to someone else, they always keep them safe. If this is true for individuals, it is certainly true for businesses.
Custodians always tell the truth and manage funds properly. They won't have any interest in taking the assets as an exchange operator would. Auditors tell the truth and can't be misled. That's because organizations that are regulated are incapable of lying and don't make mistakes.

First, some background. Here is a summary of how custodians make us more secure:

Previously, we might give Alice our crypto assets to hold. There were risks:

But "no worries", Alice has a custodian named Bob. Bob is dressed in a nice suit. He knows some politicians. And he drives a Porsche. "So you have nothing to worry about!". And look at all the benefits we get:
See - all problems are solved! All we have to worry about now is:
It's pretty simple. Before we had to trust Alice. Now we only have to trust Alice, Bob, and all the ways in which they communicate. Just think of how much more secure we are!

"On top of that", Bob assures us, "we're using a special wallet structure". Bob shows Alice a diagram. "We've broken the balance up and store it in lots of smaller wallets. That way", he assures her, "a thief can't take it all at once". And he points to a historic case where a large sum was taken "because it was stored in a single wallet... how stupid".
"Very early on, we used to have all the crypto in one wallet", he said, "and then one Christmas a hacker came and took it all. We call him the Grinch. Now we individually wrap each crypto and stick it under a binary search tree. The Grinch has never been back since."

"As well", Bob continues, "even if someone were to get in, we've got insurance. It covers all thefts and even coercion, collusion, and misplaced keys - only subject to the policy terms and conditions." And with that, he pulls out a phone-book sized contract and slams it on the desk with a thud. "Yep", he continues, "we're paying top dollar for one of the best policies in the country!"
"Can I read it?' Alice asks. "Sure," Bob says, "just as soon as our legal team is done with it. They're almost through the first chapter." He pauses, then continues. "And can you believe that sales guy Mike? He has the same year Porsche as me. I mean, what are the odds?"

"Do you use multi-sig?", Alice asks. "Absolutely!" Bob replies. "All our engineers are fully trained in multi-sig. Whenever we want to set up a new wallet, we generate 2 separate keys in an air-gapped process and store them in this proprietary system here. Look, it even requires the biometric signature from one of our team members to initiate any withdrawal." He demonstrates by pressing his thumb into the display. "We use a third-party cloud validation API to match the thumbprint and authorize each withdrawal. The keys are also backed up daily to an off-site third-party."
"Wow that's really impressive," Alice says, "but what if we need access for a withdrawal outside of office hours?" "Well that's no issue", Bob says, "just send us an email, call, or text message and we always have someone on staff to help out. Just another part of our strong commitment to all our customers!"

"What about Proof of Reserve?", Alice asks. "Of course", Bob replies, "though rather than publish any blockchain addresses or signed transaction, for privacy we just do a SHA256 refactoring of the inverse hash modulus for each UTXO nonce and combine the smart contract coefficient consensus in our hyperledger lightning node. But it's really simple to use." He pushes a button and a large green checkmark appears on a screen. "See - the algorithm ran through and reserves are proven."
"Wow", Alice says, "you really know your stuff! And that is easy to use! What about fiat balances?" "Yeah, we have an auditor too", Bob replies, "Been using him for a long time so we have quite a strong relationship going! We have special books we give him every year and he's very efficient! Checks the fiat, crypto, and everything all at once!"

"We used to have a nice offline multi-sig setup we've been using without issue for the past 5 years, but I think we'll move all our funds over to your facility," Alice says. "Awesome", Bob replies, "Thanks so much! This is perfect timing too - my Porsche got a dent on it this morning. We have the paperwork right over here." "Great!", Alice replies.
And with that, Alice gets out her pen and Bob gets the contract. "Don't worry", he says, "you can take your crypto-assets back anytime you like - just subject to our cancellation policy. Our annual management fees are also super low and we don't adjust them often".

How many holes have to exist for your funds to get stolen?
Just one.

Why are we taking a powerful offline multi-sig setup, widely used globally in hundreds of different/lacking regulatory environments with 0 breaches to date, and circumventing it by a demonstrably weak third party layer? And paying a great expense to do so?
If you go through the list of breaches in the past 2 years to highly credible organizations, you go through the list of major corporate frauds (only the ones we know about), you go through the list of all the times platforms have lost funds, you go through the list of times and ways that people have lost their crypto from identity theft, hot wallet exploits, extortion, etc... and then you go through this custodian with a fine-tooth comb and truly believe they have value to add far beyond what you could, sticking your funds in a wallet (or set of wallets) they control exclusively is the absolute worst possible way to take advantage of that security.

The best way to add security for crypto-assets is to make a stronger multi-sig. With one custodian, what you are doing is giving them your cryptocurrency and hoping they're honest, competent, and flawlessly secure. It's no different than storing it on a really secure exchange. Maybe the insurance will cover you. Didn't work for Bitpay in 2015. Didn't work for Yapizon in 2017. Insurance has never paid a claim in the entire history of cryptocurrency. But maybe you'll get lucky. Maybe your exact scenario will buck the trend and be what they're willing to cover. After the large deductible and hopefully without a long and expensive court battle.

And you want to advertise this increase in risk, the lapse of judgement, an accident waiting to happen, as though it's some kind of benefit to customers ("Free institutional-grade storage for your digital assets.")? And then some people are writing to the OSC that custodians should be mandatory for all funds on every exchange platform? That this somehow will make Canadians as a whole more secure or better protected compared with standard air-gapped multi-sig? On what planet?

Most of the problems in Canada stemmed from one thing - a lack of transparency. If Canadians had known what a joke Quadriga was - it wouldn't have grown to lose $400m from hard-working Canadians from coast to coast to coast. And Gerald Cotten would be in jail, not wherever he is now (at best, rotting peacefully). EZ-BTC and mister Dave Smilie would have been a tiny little scam to his friends, not a multi-million dollar fraud. Einstein would have got their act together or been shut down BEFORE losing millions and millions more in people's funds generously donated to criminals. MapleChange wouldn't have even been a thing. And maybe we'd know a little more about CoinTradeNewNote - like how much was lost in there. Almost all of the major losses with cryptocurrency exchanges involve deception with unbacked funds.
So it's great to see transparency reports from BitBuy and ShakePay where someone independently verified the backing. The only thing we don't have is:
It's not complicated to validate cryptocurrency assets. They need to exist, they need to be spendable, and they need to cover the total balances. There are plenty of credible people and firms across the country that have the capacity to reasonably perform this validation. Having more frequent checks by different, independent, parties who publish transparent reports is far more valuable than an annual check by a single "more credible/official" party who does the exact same basic checks and may or may not publish anything. Here's an example set of requirements that could be mandated:
There are ways to structure audits such that neither crypto assets nor customer information are ever put at risk, and both can still be properly validated and publicly verifiable. There are also ways to structure audits such that they are completely reasonable for small platforms and don't inhibit innovation in any way. By making the process as reasonable as possible, we can completely eliminate any reason/excuse that an honest platform would have for not being audited. That is arguable far more important than any incremental improvement we might get from mandating "the best of the best" accountants. Right now we have nothing mandated and tons of Canadians using offshore exchanges with no oversight whatsoever.

Transparency does not prove crypto assets are safe. CoinTradeNewNote, Flexcoin ($600k), and Canadian Bitcoins ($100k) are examples where crypto-assets were breached from platforms in Canada. All of them were online wallets and used no multi-sig as far as any records show. This is consistent with what we see globally - air-gapped multi-sig wallets have an impeccable record, while other schemes tend to suffer breach after breach. We don't actually know how much CoinTrader lost because there was no visibility. Rather than publishing details of what happened, the co-founder of CoinTrader silently moved on to found another platform - the "most trusted way to buy and sell crypto" - a site that has no information whatsoever (that I could find) on the storage practices and a FAQ advising that “[t]rading cryptocurrency is completely safe” and that having your own wallet is “entirely up to you! You can certainly keep cryptocurrency, or fiat, or both, on the app.” Doesn't sound like much was learned here, which is really sad to see.
It's not that complicated or unreasonable to set up a proper hardware wallet. Multi-sig can be learned in a single course. Something the equivalent complexity of a driver's license test could prevent all the cold storage exploits we've seen to date - even globally. Platform operators have a key advantage in detecting and preventing fraud - they know their customers far better than any custodian ever would. The best job that custodians can do is to find high integrity individuals and train them to form even better wallet signatories. Rather than mandating that all platforms expose themselves to arbitrary third party risks, regulations should center around ensuring that all signatories are background-checked, properly trained, and using proper procedures. We also need to make sure that signatories are empowered with rights and responsibilities to reject and report fraud. They need to know that they can safely challenge and delay a transaction - even if it turns out they made a mistake. We need to have an environment where mistakes are brought to the surface and dealt with. Not one where firms and people feel the need to hide what happened. In addition to a knowledge-based test, an auditor can privately interview each signatory to make sure they're not in coercive situations, and we should make sure they can freely and anonymously report any issues without threat of retaliation.
A proper multi-sig has each signature held by a separate person and is governed by policies and mutual decisions instead of a hierarchy. It includes at least one redundant signature. For best results, 3of4, 3of5, 3of6, 4of5, 4of6, 4of7, 5of6, or 5of7.

History has demonstrated over and over again the risk of hot wallets even to highly credible organizations. Nonetheless, many platforms have hot wallets for convenience. While such losses are generally compensated by platforms without issue (for example Poloniex, Bitstamp, Bitfinex, Gatecoin, Coincheck, Bithumb, Zaif, CoinBene, Binance, Bitrue, Bitpoint, Upbit, VinDAX, and now KuCoin), the public tends to focus more on cases that didn't end well. Regardless of what systems are employed, there is always some level of risk. For that reason, most members of the public would prefer to see third party insurance.
Rather than trying to convince third party profit-seekers to provide comprehensive insurance and then relying on an expensive and slow legal system to enforce against whatever legal loopholes they manage to find each and every time something goes wrong, insurance could be run through multiple exchange operators and regulators, with the shared interest of having a reputable industry, keeping costs down, and taking care of Canadians. For example, a 4 of 7 multi-sig insurance fund held between 5 independent exchange operators and 2 regulatory bodies. All Canadian exchanges could pay premiums at a set rate based on their needed coverage, with a higher price paid for hot wallet coverage (anything not an air-gapped multi-sig cold wallet). Such a model would be much cheaper to manage, offer better coverage, and be much more reliable to payout when needed. The kind of coverage you could have under this model is unheard of. You could even create something like the CDIC to protect Canadians who get their trading accounts hacked if they can sufficiently prove the loss is legitimate. In cases of fraud, gross negligence, or insolvency, the fund can be used to pay affected users directly (utilizing the last transparent balance report in the worst case), something which private insurance would never touch. While it's recommended to have official policies for coverage, a model where members vote would fully cover edge cases. (Could be similar to the Supreme Court where justices vote based on case law.)
Such a model could fully protect all Canadians across all platforms. You can have a fiat coverage governed by legal agreements, and crypto-asset coverage governed by both multi-sig and legal agreements. It could be practical, affordable, and inclusive.

Now, we are at a crossroads. We can happily give up our freedom, our innovation, and our money. We can pay hefty expenses to auditors, lawyers, and regulators year after year (and make no mistake - this cost will grow to many millions or even billions as the industry grows - and it will be borne by all Canadians on every platform because platforms are not going to eat up these costs at a loss). We can make it nearly impossible for any new platform to enter the marketplace, forcing Canadians to use the same stagnant platforms year after year. We can centralize and consolidate the entire industry into 2 or 3 big players and have everyone else fail (possibly to heavy losses of users of those platforms). And when a flawed security model doesn't work and gets breached, we can make it even more complicated with even more people in suits making big money doing the job that blockchain was supposed to do in the first place. We can build a system which is so intertwined and dependent on big government, traditional finance, and central bankers that it's future depends entirely on that of the fiat system, of fractional banking, and of government bail-outs. If we choose this path, as history has shown us over and over again, we can not go back, save for revolution. Our children and grandchildren will still be paying the consequences of what we decided today.
Or, we can find solutions that work. We can maintain an open and innovative environment while making the adjustments we need to make to fully protect Canadian investors and cryptocurrency users, giving easy and affordable access to cryptocurrency for all Canadians on the platform of their choice, and creating an environment in which entrepreneurs and problem solvers can bring those solutions forward easily. None of the above precludes innovation in any way, or adds any unreasonable cost - and these three policies would demonstrably eliminate or resolve all 109 historic cases as studied here - that's every single case researched so far going back to 2011. It includes every loss that was studied so far not just in Canada but globally as well.
Unfortunately, finding answers is the least challenging part. Far more challenging is to get platform operators and regulators to agree on anything. My last post got no response whatsoever, and while the OSC has told me they're happy for industry feedback, I believe my opinion alone is fairly meaningless. This takes the whole community working together to solve. So please let me know your thoughts. Please take the time to upvote and share this with people. Please - let's get this solved and not leave it up to other people to do.
